Claude plans vs the API,token for token.
One full week of my work, priced both ways.
Last week’s work cost $3,566 at API prices, and about $52 on our two plans.
Token against token
This compares token to token.
- Same tokens, two prices: Anthropic’s published API rates, and what the subscription costs per token.
- Efficiency doesn’t enter into it: efficient or wasteful, the same tokens cost 69–137x less on a plan than on the API.
- Better efficiency doesn’t close the gap, it multiplies it: each saved token was already bought at a 98–99% discount.
- Moving to the API: every token pays list price, spent well or not.
Plan vs plan vs plan
| API | Team Premium | Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Per token | $125 a month | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| API value of a full week | n/a | $1,981 | $1,585 | $6,340 |
| API value of a full month | n/a | $8,585 | $6,868 | $27,471 |
| Work that lists at $100 on the API | $100 | $1.46 | $1.46 | $0.73 |
| API value per dollar paid | 1x | About 69x | About 69x | About 137x |
| Saving vs the API list price | 0% | 98.5% | 98.5% | 99.3% |
How to read it
- Team Premium and Max 5x come out the same: Team Premium costs 25% more and holds 25% more. $125 ÷ 6.25 = $20 and $100 ÷ 5 = $20 per Pro unit.
- Max 20x costs $10 per Pro unit, so the same tokens cost half as much.
- Max 20x was not measured. Its column assumes its weekly limit is four times Max 5x’s, the way its five-hour limit is.
Section 2 of 5 · Where the chart comes from
Last week, measured
Both accounts at their weekly limit.
Last week both my accounts hit their weekly limits. The Claude Code work in that week would have cost $3,566 at Anthropic’s API list prices.
| Same week of tokens | Cost | API list price vs what we paid |
|---|---|---|
| On the API, at list prices | $3,566 | 1x |
| On the two subscriptions ($225 a month) | $51.92 | About 69x |
| Including the $50 extra-usage cap ($275 a month) | $63.46 | About 56x |
From the week to each plan
Anthropic rates its plans as multiples of Pro: Team Premium 6.25x, Max 5x and Max 20x. My two full limits add up to 11.25 Pro units, so one unit held about $317 of API-priced tokens. Each plan’s column in the chart is that figure times its multiple.
Weekly costs spread the monthly price evenly across the year: $225 × 12 ÷ 52 = $51.92.
Section 3 of 5 · Your question
Paying the API after the limit
Extra usage past a plan’s limit is billed at API list prices. At those prices, last week’s work cost $3,566, against about $52 for the same week on the subscriptions.
Where it stands this month
The Team seat’s $50 extra-usage cap is already used: $51.05 of $50, as of 10/19.
What that means
Every token past the limit costs list price. The same tokens inside a plan cost 1/56th to 1/137th as much, depending on the plan.
Section 4 of 5 · Wrap-up
Where this leaves us
The result
- Last week: $3,566 of work at API prices, about $52 on our two plans.
- Per token: Team Premium and Max 5x run about 69x below API list price. Max 20x runs about 137x below.
- The API: the most expensive way to run the same tokens, by a wide margin.
What it points to
Your Enterprise inquiry is aiming at the right number: around 20x per seat. At that size, the same work costs half as much per token as it does on Team Premium or Max 5x.
Paying the API for overflow is the one option that costs list price for every token.
