Closed on YouTube: watch hours and sponsorship

Qualified watch hours and sponsorship answer different questions. Closed can pursue disclosed sponsors without waiting for the ads tier.

The question

Justin asked two direct questions. This brief keeps the answers separate.

What counts, and where Closed stands

Qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos in the last 12 months. Ads are optional, and sponsorships do not require the YouTube Partner Program.

Counts

Public long-form viewing

Why hours can lag subscriber count

The causes below are inference from Closed's numbers, not statements from YouTube. The levers come from YouTube's guidance.

Inference: subscribers acquired through paid services and Demand Gen campaigns may watch little, while direct views from ads do not count toward qualified hours.

  • Paid subscribers may watch littleSubscribers from paid services and Demand Gen campaigns often never watch an episode.
  • Long episodes can lose viewers earlyA subscriber who leaves at minute 2 adds almost no hours.
  • Hours are channel-wide7,751 subscribers at about 1.7 minutes each would still equal 220 hours. This is arithmetic only.
  • Fix intro dipsMatch the thumbnail and title to the content, and test the first 30 seconds.
  • Move strength earlierAudiences shrink over a video. Cut or restructure dips and clarify spikes.
  • Aim for satisfactionJudge valued watch time, not clicks, and check organic traffic separately from paid.

Eight ways to sponsor the Closed podcast

Every model needs YouTube's paid-promotion label when money or value changes hands, plus a clear spoken and on-screen disclosure.

Model 1

AidenCRM as house sponsor

What it is
A recurring mini insert for AidenCRM, a partner product from RxCare as Nick described it.
Sponsor gets
A 30 to 60 second host-read spot and a description link.
Effort
Low
Risk
A related-party link can look like an ad dressed up as advice. Say the relationship out loud.

Model 2

Justin's book as a recurring spot

What it is
A short, repeated plug, usually post-roll or a short mid-roll.
Sponsor gets
Self-promotion. Say "my book" plainly.
Effort
Low
Risk
Over-repetition tires listeners. Cap it at one slot per episode.

Model 3

The Closed Question, presented by a sponsor

What it is
A branded recurring segment instead of an ad break.
Sponsor gets
Naming rights and a mention at open and close.
Effort
Medium
Risk
The sponsor must not control the question. Label "presented by" as sponsorship.

Model 4

Season sponsor

What it is
One partner across a season.
Sponsor gets
Logo, mentions, and sometimes a conversation with its people.
Effort
Medium-high
Risk
Fewer partners create more dependence. Label every episode.

Model 5

Industry vendors agents already buy from

What it is
CRM, E&O or compliance tools, and training vendors.
Sponsor gets
A host-read mid-roll to a relevant buyer audience.
Effort
Medium
Risk
A vendor that competes with an HPM partner creates conflicts. Check first.

Model 6

Carriers, Justin's idea

What it is
An episode sponsored by a carrier such as Devoted Health, with a talking-head segment.
Sponsor gets
A sponsored episode and a talking-head segment.
Effort
High
Risk
Highest of all eight. Medicare marketing rules may apply. Do not schedule before HPM compliance clears it.

Model 7

Guest's company as co-sponsor

What it is
The guest's employer sponsors its own guest's episode, bundled into a guest package.
Sponsor gets
Its guest appears in a co-sponsored episode.
Effort
Medium
Risk
It can slide toward paid guests. No clean example was verified.

Model 8

Sponsored guest, Nick's idea

What it is
A company pays, or provides value, so its person appears.
Sponsor gets
Its person appears as a guest, with the connection disclosed on air, on screen, in the description, and through YouTube's label.
Effort
Medium
Risk
High for an authority-first show. Justin must choose every guest on merit first, or the model can erode trust.
Operating path / 5

How HPM lines these up

The order starts with rules and an in-house pilot, then earns the right to approach outside sponsors.

  1. Phase 1, set the rules, week 1. Write the disclosure standard. Justin and Nick decide. Write the editorial-independence rule. Justin decides.
  2. Phase 2, pilot in-house, weeks 2 to 6. Run AidenCRM and the book in two or three episodes. Nick approves the pilot. Nick's team measures watch time, retention at the spot, and link clicks in Studio.
  3. Phase 3, build the sponsor kit, weeks 4 to 8. Use Closed's own Studio numbers for a one-page kit. Price from the pilot, not from guesses. The input does not name a decision owner.
  4. Phase 4, pick 3 to 5 targets by type, weeks 6 to 10. Nick and Justin choose the targets. Nick gives explicit approval for each outreach message.
  5. Phase 5, carrier and sponsored-guest gates. HPM compliance decides on carriers. Hold sponsored guests until the Phase 1 rule exists and the pilot shows audience trust is intact.
Recommendation / 6

Start in-house, then earn the pitch

The approved recommendation keeps the first test small, measurable, and disclosed.

1

Pilot AidenCRM and the book now, with a written disclosure standard.

2

Build a one-page kit from Closed's own Studio numbers, then approach 3 to 5 vendors by type.

3

Park the carrier episode until compliance clears it, and hold sponsored guests until an independence rule is set.

Limits / 7

Not verified

These questions remain open. They should not be presented as settled facts.

  • Whether a channel can join the ads tier and default every video to ads off.
  • Whether subscribers from ad campaigns count toward the subscriber threshold. A search summary said they do not, but the page was not opened.
  • Current CMS marketing rules. Only an older edition was found.
  • Any sponsor prices or Closed's audience-based rate.
  • The 10/2 watch-quality pull. The commit holds only a script, no data.
  • Any example of a guest's company co-sponsoring its own episode.
  • Current CMS rules and any carrier's own content approval process.
  • That named vendors currently sponsor named shows. The evidence was a search summary only.
  • Prices and Closed's audience numbers for a kit.
  • What AidenCRM or RxCare terms exist. The input takes the partnership as Nick described it.
