Part 1 of 6 · Why it works

Start here

The idea behind the whole guide, and where it comes from.

A note for Justin before you start

This guide works both ways. Part of its job is to hand you ideas, structures and questions, so you don't have to come up with everything on your own.

But you've already got plans in your head, and we don't want to step on them or duplicate them. So before we build more, tell Nick what you already have:

  • the guests and topics you've planned or recorded for the rest of Season 4;
  • what you're thinking for Season 5 (themes, guests you want, any arc);
  • which of the rituals in section 9 you'd actually enjoy doing on camera.

We'll build around what you've got, and fill the gaps with new ideas that don't overlap it.

This is the master guide. It lays out the structure every episode follows. As we go, each episode gets its own guide built on this one, written for that guest and that lesson:

  • the exact questions;
  • the strongest moments to hunt for;
  • every beat mapped out, so nothing is left to guesswork on the day.

The one idea

For Justin. One idea behind all of it:

Insurance isn't boring. The paperwork can be, but the people never are.

Behind every plan is a kitchen table, someone who was worried, and an agent who showed up.

Nobody leans in for a plan comparison. People lean in for:

  • the morning an agent almost quit;
  • the client who still calls them years later;
  • the year they bet the house on building an agency.

That's the story.

But a story on its own isn't enough. A viewer who just watched a great story with no takeaway won't come back for the next one. An episode that's all takeaway with no story never gets watched in the first place.

Both have to be there, every time. The rest of this guide is built on that one idea.

What Closed covers

This guide borrows what works on The Diary of a CEO (Steven Bartlett) and How I Built This (Guy Raz). It keeps Closed's raw, straight-talk feel and fits it to our world, which is wider than it looks from the outside:

  • Medicare, ACA, ancillary and the rest of the product shelf;
  • building an agency or an FMO, and leading the people in it;
  • recruiting, leads, and marketing;
  • carriers, contracting, and the products and partners agents work with (an AI CRM like Aiden by RxCare, AI call centers and phone systems, the tools that run an agency day to day);
  • sales, service and retention;
  • compliance, mindset, money, and the life behind the business.

That list isn't the edge of it. If it matters to an agent's week, it's fair game.
